ISLAMIC, Seljuks. Great Seljuk. Mu'izz al-Din Ahmad Sanjar, as viceroy under Muhammad, AH 492-511 / AD 1099-1118. Dinar (Electrum, 19 mm, 2.94 g, 4 h), A mule with an old die, mint effaced (possibly Herat), date off flan. ‘Allāh / Muḥammad rasūl / al-sulṭān / al-muʿaẓẓam Muḥammad / ibn Malikshāh’ (‘Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. The great sultan Muhammad son of Malikshah’ in Arabic); mint and date formula in the inner margin, of which only ‘bism Allāh ḍuriba hādhā al-dīnār …’ (‘In the name of Allah. This dinar was struck …’ in Arabic) is legible. Rev. Within a circular border of two dragons,, ‘naṣr min Allāh / Muḥammad rasūl / Allāh al-sulṭān / al-muʿaẓẓam Muḥammad / ibn Malikshāh / ʿadl’ (‘Help is from Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. The great sultan Muhammad son of Malikshah. Justice’ in Arabic). Album 49 (2024), 2127 (but described as Album 1683.2). Cf. Album 1683.2 (for obverse) and Album 1685.2 (for reverse). Rare. Struck from a worn obverse die and a few minor scratches, otherwise, about very fine.
